What is the difference between Consist and Comprise?

They are commonly confused, which results in the classic estate agent error, “comprises of”.

To consist of means to be made up of something or to be composed of it. Note the word “of” here.

The house consists of 7 large rooms.

To comprise something also means to be made up of it but note that the word “of” is not used here.

The house comprises 7 large rooms.
